This has been a wonderful week, full of sunshine, a little rain and wind to blow the calves dry! It is fun to see the babies hopping around so happy to be alive. We had a calf that was lost because he followed some recalcitrant fence crawlers out into the wrong place. Cole found the calf. We are so thankful and the cows are in lockdown and slated to be sold once they have paid their debt to the Richter society!

Calving is the word of the day everywhere in the neighborhood. Mostly it is going along wonderfully.

Dean and Mary Tarter made a quick trip to Dickinson, Monday. Mary made a parts run to Bowman, Thursday, and Dean made a parts run to Belle Friday. The rest of the week was spent feeding and calving!

Lori and Kylie Teller spent the weekend at John and Linda Humbrachts,’ helping with calving.

Russell and Mary Cramer had a fairly quiet week. They welcomed the returning Meadowlarks, Monday. Friday Mary had to hide the rat and trap in a box so that the children, (Gracie, Kylie and Cade) would not see it before Becky had it set up for one of her April Fool’s pranks. Both Russell and Mary went to the Hills for many errands in Belle Fourche and Rapid City.

John and Kay had a fun week. Monday, Mike Othaudt stopped by for a visit. Jesse Bail stopped by, Wednesday, and had coffee. Kay had to leave for Buffalo for her chiropractic appointment. Thursday, John went to Spearfish for his annual checkup. All checked out well! He met his former classmate, Bernard Iszler and they had lunch together at Perkins. Friday John and Kay went to Senior Citizens for lunch. Kay played cards afterward and John ran errands. After church Sunday, later in the afternoon, Becky stopped for coffee with John and Kay.

Miles and Kayla Spickelmier had a busy week with calving going right along. Kayla put on a TyTuff goat tying clinic at Flandreau, SD, Friday and came home Sunday. Hazen went with Kaycee and Meza Moody to Keen Jensen’s birthday party and then stayed with them over night and came to church with them, Sunday. Krece spent his time with grandpa and grandma in the day and with dad in the evenings.

The Bails spent the week cooking, cleaning and calving. Kim and the boys laid some wood flooring in front of the fire place. They are trying to finish up some of those last few details. Now they are getting ready to stain and seal it. Saturday was beautiful and everyone rode horses and stayed outside all day. Moms everywhere can relate to this old trick. While tucking Kruze into bed Kim told him, “You better clean this room after you come in tomorrow.” Kruze asked, “Mom will you do it please?” After being told “no” he replied, “But you do it so much better.”

Wayne and Susan Nelson were in Spearfish, Sunday afternoon to join friends and family members celebrating Rick Mowell’s milestone birthday at Guadalajara’s restaurant. The rest of the week was spent with the usual livestock and grand kid schedule!

Darwin and Kay Latham are in the thick of calving, also. They did get time to go listen to the speaker in Buffalo, Monday, that was hosted by Be The Light. Friday, Darwin, Kay, Jaydon, Jarrett and James went to Belle Fourche to pick up a pickup that was at Frontier Glass. Lonny Parmely came out and helped the guys brand some cows the next day.

Carmen Gilbert helped the other parents of High School junior students get prom prizes put together, Wednesday. The junior class is putting the prom on this coming Saturday. Matt and Carmen sorted the rest of the cows this week and hauled dries to St. Onge. Friday, they went over to Meyers’ for a birthday party for RJ and Jen. Gracy had a college rodeo in Ft. Collins all weekend. Gage left for Rapid City Sunday for state student council which will happen all day Monday.

Wednesday evening, Wes Humbracht came down from Bowman to help calve Thursday. He left that evening. Brad came up Friday afternoon to help with calving and left Sunday.

Becky Holsti kept a chiropractor appointment in Buffalo, Wednesday morning. Paula Richter rode along with her as Paula also had a couple appointments. Friday, Gracie, Kylie, Cade and Emma Richter helped Becky with some riding chores. (Hailey went with grandma Paula to Baker to take little Bandit up to the vet to have him checked out after his little incident of running in front of a vehicle.) When the riders came in for dinner, there was a large rat in a trap on Becky’s stairway! They also encountered frogs in the pudding and octopus in the jello. Greg and Paula Richter, Cathy Richter, Emma and Hailey stopped by for dinner, Saturday. The octopus had disappeared from the jello by then. Other than that the week was pretty much dedicated to calving chores.

We are hoping for more rain this week. Every pasture needs a good drink. There are places which look like the Sahara. But we wait, praising God for all the wonderful things he has put in place.

Have a great week, everyone. Pray for rain.
