Beta Sigma Phi will be out April 11 collecting for the Fallon County Community Fund Drive. . .National Agriculture Week was March 4-10 and local winners of the Bumper Sticker Contest were Halle Burdick first place for fourth grade, Courtney Tudor – first place for fifth grade and Makayla Wynn – first place for sixth grade. . .High temperature for March 30 was 80 degrees. . .Gamma Beta Easter Egg Hunt was well attended March 31 at the fairgrounds. The eggs were stuffed by residents of Fallon Medical Complex Nursing Home and Quality Personal Care. . .Maurice and Adair Flatness will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary April 18. They will also celebrate Maurice’s 97th birthday and Adair’s 93rd birthday. . .Brown’s Custom Feeds is no longer in business. Lawlar Hydrovac is the new business that has moved into Brown’s building. . .Mandi Arnold is returning to N Styl. . .MSU Extension forestry specialist Dr. Peter Kolb put on an excellent workshop March 27-28 in Ekalaka.

Jan. 4, 2002, in an awards ceremony con­ducted by the commander of the 3rd Marine Regiment at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base, Hawaii, Robert Neumann was presented the Combat Action Ribbon for his participation in the Battle of Oki­nawa in 1945. . .Daylight Saving Time begins April 6. . .Fallon Med­ical Complex Laboratory would like to announce National Medical Laboratory Week, April 14-20. There will be an open house April 18 to honor the lab employees. Full-time lab employees are Dr. Jones (FMC lab director), Marli Eby-Stanhope (lab manager), Leslie Henson (clinical lab scien­tist, MT), Lacee Janz (clinical lab technician, MLT), and Linda Remillong (lab clerk/assistant). . .The trailer home of Fritz and Ruby Goerndt was considered a total loss as half of the interior was de­stroyed by flames and the other half received smoke and heat dam­age. The Baker Volunteer Fire De­partment was called to the fire March 28. . .Fallon County Spelling Bee was held March 5 and was won by Amanda Mellon. Amanda is a seventh grader at Plevna. She will represent Fallon County at the State Bee in Missoula, April 6. . .David Havens is a Republican can­didate for the Montana House of Representatives for District 1. . .Sharon Gookin and Teddy Stod­dard attended a community devel­opment regional meeting in Bozeman recently. . .Randash Motors gave away $200 in Baker Bucks recently and the winner was Billy Dietz.

30 YEARS AGO Thursday, April 2, 1992 —

Fal­lon Medical Hospital’s Hospice Program received state licensure last week and volunteer training is underway. Kathryn Ravenscraft is head of the new program. . .1992 prom king and queen are Lando Crawford and Kalli Rost. . .A re­tirement party for Bud Madler and Clint Bryson will be held April 4. . .Plevna School Superintendent Earl McKinley invited Plevna Sen­ior Citizens to visit the Plevna Schools a week ago. During the morning he explained the interac­tive television system and they were able to observe students in their Spanish class which was con­ducted over the ITV. . .Vera Hor­ton celebrated her 91st birthday Saturday. . .Annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby held March 22. Winners were Michael Klang, Joey Hufford and Drew Abrams. . .Vandals using BB guns damaged several Baker businesses, private homes, and vehicles late Feb. 28. Two juveniles, aged 14 and 17, were turned over to the juvenile probation officer in connection with the incident. Damage esti­mates totaling $12,795.44 were turned in.

40 YEARS AGO Thursday, April 8, 1982 —

Baker Recreation Facility mill levy passed by a sizeable margin in Tuesday’s school election. In Baker, both the high school and el­ementary mill levy passed, and Helmut Straub was elected to an­other term on the board of trustees by defeating Tom McNaney. . .Pic­tured is Molly McClanahan, Fallon Memorial Hospital’s new director of nursing. She moved here from Salt Lake City. . .According to Steve Spence, administrator at Fal­lon Memorial Hospital, our hospital is experiencing serious financial difficulties. Spence said the prob­lem has reached the point where serious measures are being taken to reduce expenses. . .Rick Danel­son has accepted the head boys basketball position, and Tom Kendall has accepted the position as head coach of the girls basket­ball team for the 82-83 season. . .Dennis Peplow is the new manager of the Equity Elevator in Baker and the Farmers Co-op Elevator in Plevna. He and his wife Janice have three children and moved here from Leola, SD. . .Pictured is Mrs. Adell Sleeth standing beside a giant geranium plant that is grow­ing in her home.

50 YEARS AGO Thursday, April 6, 1972 —

School elections were held and the high school and elementary levies were defeated. Newly elected school board members were Rex Farstveet, Herb McCamish and Al Grenstiner. . .The Kenneth Thompson family are newcomers to Baker. . .Mrs. Lucille Riley was elected president of the Montana Association of County Superin­tendents at the annual meeting held March 28- 29 in Helena. . .Joe Goroski is pictured with a seven pound Northern.

60 YEARS AGO Thursday, April 5, 1962 —

Commander Duane Rindy opened the largest spring convention ever held by District 10 American Le­gion Posts and Auxiliaries in Baker, Sunday. . .Baker music stu­dents received high ratings at the district music festival held in Glen­dive. Superior ratings were re­ceived by the Baker High School Band, girls glee club, boys glee club, girls sextet, vocal duet by Diane Morrow and Margaret Coen and solo by Diane Morrow. . .The home of Edmond Scheuffele was ransacked and approximately $180 was stolen. . .The extra ten mill school levy was defeated at the special election, causing much dis­cussion as how obligations, hiring of teachers and maintenance of school property could be con­ducted with the present budget. . .“Uptown Beauty Haven” opened this week under the direction of Mavis Schweigert.

70 YEARS AGO Thursday, April 3, 1952 —

Baker Chapter FFA judging team consisting of Gary Hurley, Eddie Sikorski, Hallie Bickle and Melvin Schell and their advisor Howard Breitbach won the sweepstakes award at the Big Muddy District convention in Bainville. . .The town of Marmarth was flooded Monday and many families were evacuated from the low areas as water reached a two foot level in some homes. The Little Missouri reached the highest level in his­tory, 23.1 feet.

80 YEARS AGO Thursday, April 2, 1942 —

1,500 pounds of old license plates were collected in Fallon County and will be taken to Deer Lodge to be reused. . .Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Cate left Thursday with a caravan of eight trucks, several cars and a trailer house for Rapid City where he has contracted to do defense work on an airport being con­structed there. Accompanying them were Mr. and Mrs. Gene Chesmore, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Morris, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Parks, Art Math­iason, Cliff Moody, Walt Young and Tom Lunder. . .Ordered to re­port for the draft were Joseph Burnosky, Axel Wiman, Herman Follmer, John Fuchs, Walter Mar­tin Spriggs, Tony Sieler, Orie Pratt, Daniel Wash, Simon Sieler, Edwin Fried, Emil Schell, Clarence Leis­chner, Raymond Fost, Roland Schrader, Herbert Schueler, John Andolshek, Lyle Perry, Earl Miller, and Vernerd Schuetzle.

90 YEARS AGO Thursday, April 7, 1932 —

Mrs. Lewis LaCross is the newly elected president of the Baker Woman’s Club. . .Wm. Thielen and Tilly Rabe were united in mar­riage April 4 in Plevna. . .The Camp Crook Bank will be closing its doors and all business will be transferred to Belle Fourche. The bank in Camp Crook has been in business since 1902. . .On sale this week at the local Penney Store is leather handbags for 98 cents and cotton frocks for $1.00.

100 YEARS AGO Thursday, April 6, 1922 —

The city election is over, bringing forth the following new city officers Ernest Heinrich, Mayor; Paul Hubbard, Policy Magistrate; Ed Hansen, City Treasurer; E. O. Lentz, Alderman First Ward; W. H. Young, Alderman Sec. Ward. . .The school bond issue of $3,000, put up to the voters of school district No. 12, for the installing of toilets and sewer system and other improvements in the Baker High School building, carried overwhelmingly at the election held April 1, the vote being 107 for and 55 against. . .The county commissioners have started a strict economy at the courthouse by taking out the phones in all offices. . . M. C. New- strom, proprietor of Charters Baker Co., bought the buildings and lots joining the First National Bank south and west, including, the lot formerly occupied by the Baker Mercantile store. Mr. Newstrom is planning the erection of a large store building.
