10 YEARS AGO Friday, Feb. 10, 2012 —

Ten Spartan wrestlers qualify for State Tournament. They are Tyler Law, Jonny Wiseman, Cody Perry, Travis Koenig, Dustin Morigeau, Cody Beyers, David Thibodeau, Buster Pickett, Mason Melby and Dustin Irgens. . .Fallon County is predicted to see a substantial amount of growth in the next couple of years as indicated in an article about the Bakken oil field. The article gave an overview of how things are in the Williston, ND area and what we can do to try to get ahead of the changes. . .High temperature was 49 degrees Feb. 5. . .Jack Lawler celebrated his 93rd birthday. . .Dale Newell has been hired as the new manager for Lakeview Country Club. He took over after Maria Varner retired. . .Mrs. Lesh and Mrs. Wedemeyer’s kindergarten classes collected 100 cans of food for the local food bank. They did this to celebrate the 100th day of school. . .Plevna boys and girls basketball teams will be at their district tourney in Miles City Feb. 15-18. . .Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest winners at the council level were Tesla Erickson, Mariah Miller, Alivia Schultz, Morgan Miller, Danielle Kittelmann, Trenton Collins, Gerit Cabot, Cameron MacKay, Daniel Rost and Zane Tunby.

20 YEARS AGO Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 —

Baker Spartan wrestling team placed second at the Divisional Tournament in Forsyth. Those who placed at the Divisional Tournament will travel to Billings for the State Wrestling Tournament Feb. 8-9. . .Picture: Jamie Byrne of Mill Iron bagged a 120 pound mountain lion Feb. 3, making this the seventh confirmed kill this season. Dogs were used to track the animal which was shot on the Frank and Roger Nies Ranch about seven miles east of the Mill Iron road. . .Jan. 2, an Ekalaka family, Jay and Laura House, and their four children were involved in a serious automobile accident outside of Tampa, FL. The Houses are part of the full-time staff at Trail’s End Ranch. Jay and the children were uninjured, but Laura sustained severe head trauma and broken bones. She is still in a coma and on a respirator. . .An open house will be held Feb. 11 to celebrate Fallon County Library’s 80th anniversary. . .Fallon County will be represented in the Agriculture in Montana Bumper Sticker Contest by three Plevna students. They are Ryan Wenz, Robbie Gray and Rachelle Houzvicka. . .Picture: Wyet Christensen, leader David Gustafson, Bret Christensen, Buddy Benedict, Mark Kapps and Jon Gustafson of Boy Scout Troop 258 are shown with the 721 items of groceries they collected for the Fallon County Community Cupboard.

30 YEARS AGO Thursday, Feb. 6, 1992 —

Plevna High School has been awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Commerce to establish a PBS television station. Superintendent Earl McKinley applied for the grant. . .Cristal Ketterling celebrated her tenth birthday Jan. 28. After school that day while walking with a friend she found a wallet. She saw a lot of $100 bills in the wallet and went to the courthouse to turn it in to the Fallon County Sheriff. The wallet contained $5,389. She was rewarded for her honesty by Sheriff Leland Gundlach with a monetary reward. Cristal’s parents are Baker Police Chief Randy and Barb Ketterling. . .Clyde Crawford is the owner of Clyde’s Taxidermy. A 1989 BHS graduate, Clyde became a licensed taxidermist in 1991. . .Girls State delegates from Fallon County are Amber Panasuk of Plevna High School, Tracie Wheeler and Shelly Spriggs of Baker High School. Alternates are Michelle Sieler from Plevna and Nicole Leischner from Baker. . .Beta Pi Sorority is sponsoring a Singing Valentine and Heart Cake for Valentine’s Day. . .Plevna Senior Citizens held an informal meeting Jan. 30 and presented quilts they had made to Babe Billingsley and Shelley MacKay. Babe and Shelley lost their home and all their belongings in a fire. The senior citizens also dressed a doll that was given to Edith MacKay.

40 YEARS AGO Thursday, Feb. 11, 1982 —

At a special city council meeting held Feb. 4, the city fathers agreed to defer the restrictions in selling city water to oil field service companies until Feb. 21. . .A benefit fund has been started in Baker for Nicki Rindy Hoem of Billings to help pay for the expensive cancer treatment that the Hoem family is experiencing. . .Pictured are the four Spartan wrestlers who will be competing in the state wrestling meet in Butte this weekend, they are Mark Domagala, Rich Becker, Thadd O’Donnell and Chad Afrank. . .A benefit dance for George and Betty Eichhorn will be held Feb. 13. . .Boy Scout Jon Neumann, past Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 258, began an Eagle Scout project this fall by helping folks at the Prairie Manor do all kinds of jobs. . .There will be a Valentine party and fellowship program for all Lutheran Church women Feb. 16. . .The wind has been whipping the snow around the buildings and people are busy removing the snow with their bobcats. The low temperature Feb. 8 was minus 20 degrees.

50 YEARS AGO Thursday, Feb. 10, 1972 —

Amy Brown was hit by a car driven by Mr. Roger Nicks but was uninjured. . .The Rick Stark home was totally destroyed by fire this week and all of their belongings were lost. . .Pictured is Rod Helgerson, currently attending the University of Montana, where he will act in the play, “Hello Dolly”. . .Pictured are the winners of the ladies pool tournament held at Heiser’s Bar. Winners were Margaret Heiser, Millie Warner and Gayle Harpster. . .Becky Thompson is pictured after being crowned homecoming queen at Miles Community College. . .The kids snowmobile races which were held Sunday on Baker Lake were a real success as the weather was fairly nice and 30 contestants took part in the fun.

60 YEARS AGO Thursday, Feb. 8, 1962 —

County Commissioners will continue to oppose Shell Oil’s water injection program until they are satisfied that the water resources will not be depleted to the detriment of ranchers and the City of Baker. . .District 4 Class C tournament will be held in the Baker High School gym Feb. 15-17. . .Representatives of the several fund raising drives met to consider a plan to combine their manpower in making a community wide canvass for their respective causes. . .The Darrell Johnsons filed a contract deed, giving them possession of the old 101 Ranch on Little Beaver Creek, one of the landmarks of eastern Montana since 1901. . .Included in the new Gambles store is a lunch room which will be open in time for tournament business.

70 YEARS AGO Thursday, Feb. 7, 1952 —

319 new wells will be drilled in Montana compared with 262 in 1951, according to the annual review and forecast issue of the Oil and Gas Journal. . .Baker Commercial Club and visitors from Miles City, Forsyth and other surrounding areas met and talked over the promotion of Highway 12 and Highway 7. . .A TB x-ray unit will visit Baker in March. . .High temperature Feb. 6 was 36 above and the low was 15 above.

80 YEARS AGO Thursday, Feb. 5, 1942 —

“War Time” will go into effect Feb. 9 all over the nation. At this time all clocks will be moved ahead one hour as a means of conserving power for defense operations. Mayor Lewis La- Cross asked all Baker residents to cooperate in observing the new daylight savings time. . .Paralysis Campaign to raise funds and the birthday ball are termed huge success. . .The Burns-Mc- Grew Motors moved their supplies, fixtures and repair department to the building just north of the Lake Theater. . .Mrs. Eva Agler was sworn in as deputy assessor, taking over the duties of Lewis Stuempges who resigned. . .MDU Co. will increase their floor space by 1,000 square feet to remedy the lack of space in their office building.

90 YEARS AGO Thursday, Feb. 11, 1932 —

Prominent pioneer, Mrs. Carrie Hildreth, succumbs to heart trouble Thursday night, is laid to rest Monday. . .Judge S. E. Felt has been asked to deliver the principal address at the annual Past Master’s night and George Washington bicentennial celebration of the Glendive Lodge No. 31. . .George L. Corey, the only civil war veteran in Fallon County, passed away Tuesday. . .Fathers and sons, 140 of them, sat down to their annual banquet at the Community Hall Tuesday. . .Hardly had the snow plows cleared the main highways by Wednesday morning when another snow flurry and wind storm swept the country and blocked the roads.

100 YEARS AGO Thursday, Feb. 9, 1922 —

A Baker Dairy Loan Association has been organized with a capital of $10,000. The incorporators are as follows: O. Christopher, R. F. Smith, Geo. Raymond, E. H. Heinrich, L. B. Lacross, E. H. Trandum, Dr. A. D. Brewer, D. R. Young, E. O. Lentz, W. F. Ladwig and Thos. Forde. . .C. A. Rasmussen, internal revenue collector for Montana, has appointed L. C. Burns of Baker as deputy. Mr. Burns will leave for Helena this week to receive instructions and designation of territory which will probably include the 16th judicial district and probably two or three additional counties.
